Ostrich Leather

One of the most popular and recognized exotic skins is Ostrich leather, especially leg skin.

Originating in South Africa in the 1850s, it was discovered as a unique byproduct from the Ostriches farmed for their feathers & meat. Ostrich leather is relatively rare, making it desirable and thus expensive. It’s generally used for luxury leather items, such as the iconic Hermés Birkin handbag.

Ostrich leg leather: The most striking feature of a real ostrich leather bag or purse is the scale structure arranged in layers. The large scales are usually hard and naturally shiny, parallel, and tightly aligned in a straight line. If you look closely, you will notice gaps between the scales.

Ostrich Leather Characteristics

Ostrich skin contains a special fat that prevents it from breaking, cracking, hard, and drying. It is 5 times stronger and softer than cowhide. Besides, ostrich leather has high breathability, no static electricity, good insulation, soft ostrich skin surface, and multi-faceted and non-duplicating patterns making ostrich leather fashion products colorful. It is this that has made this leather material attract a lot of attention in the fashion market and become a high-class leather product.

This skin is characterized by a layered scaly structure. The scales are shiny and hard horny, with gaps between the scales. The layers of scales are arranged parallel to each other and run in a straight line that looks very nice. We can also see these things with the naked eye, or you can check the layering and firmness of the scales with your hands. The joints between the scales are soft and flexible when we use or bend the product.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF OSTRICH LEG LEATHER PRODUCTS?

As most ostrich finishes are transparent, is best to keep them in a cool, dry place when not being used, and covered in a clean box or dust bag to prevent dust settlement.
You will want to avoid exposing your ostrich leather to situations where it’ll get spilled or wet, but when that inevitable oversight strikes, remove as much moisture as you can by dabbing it up with a soft, dry cloth. Remember: blot, don’t smear.
If there is a stain, use a damp cloth when blotting to transfer the substance, and wipe the rest of the leather with another damp cloth to ensure the item dries evenly. Take care of any stains sooner rather than later, before they can set in.
If an oil or grease stain does set in, no worries! You’ll want to sprinkle talcum powder over the stain to absorb the oil and wait about an hour. Brush the powder away with a soft cloth (not a brush or paper product), and the stain should be gone.
Clean off the excess dirt and dust with a soft cloth before cleaning it.
Wipe the surface of your leather gently and evenly with a damp cloth, and allow it to dry indoors in a cool place away from sunlight and direct heat. Also to remember, to wipe it evenly across the entire surface, and then wipe off any excess leather cleaner with a dry cloth.
Lastly, use a conditioner. And remember to test before in a discreet area and see if there’s no damage on the leather.
