What is buttero leather?
Walpier “Buttero” is the famous item produced by Conceria Walpier Tannery, a recognized tannery of the Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium, on vegetable-tanned square shoulders. The consortium consists of over 20 of the finest tanneries in Tuscany. To be a part of the consortium is to be recognized for your quality.
Walpier Buttero leather is a purely of vegetable tanned leather with a smooth grain structure. Veg leather uses animal fats (tallow) and other natural vegetable oils. This is premium leather, characterized by a beautiful smooth finish surface that makes this leather look very appealing with a deep and rich color.
Buttero leather is not an oiled Vacchetta, it has medium temper and firm hand. Since the surface of the leather is very natural, it is possible to see some natural marks or spots that are considered not defects but an added value.
For all these reasons, this leather also enters rightfully into the category of the best Italian vegetable tanned leathers. This 100% veg-tan leather is ideal for producing bags, satchels, briefcases, wallets, belts, shoes, harnesses, saddlery, binding, and leather goods.
Buttero Leather Characteristics
- Buttero is cut from the shoulder of the hide, which gives it a fantastic tensile strength and quality. The thickness of Buttero skin will be completely natural. Their distinctive feature is that there will be skins of different thicknesses and they depend on the product you want to process.
- Leather material is also completely natural. Each piece of leather will have different densities and background details. Therefore, it will create a unique feature for each product.
- Buttero leather has an attractive smell, with hints of vegetable dyes. The scent on the skin is an unmistakable feature. It can be said that no other skin in the world has it.
- At the same time, after undergoing special heat treatment. This process is a unique, proprietary formula that the new manufacturing facility has applied to enhance scratch resistance to prolong the life and strength of the leather. The colours are dyed through to maintain the look from grain side to flesh side.
- Time of use will also bring characteristics to each skin over the years. Of course, this is characteristic of vegetable-dyed leather. After a period of use, the skin will automatically transform according to the user and create distinctive features with a personal impression.
- Featuring plant-dyed leather and keeping the surface intact, Buttero leather is very easy to scratch. Scratches formed during use will fade over time as dust, dirt, and sweat accumulate. However, this does not affect the beauty of the skin, but on the contrary, they create a unique feature.
- Buttero patinas wonderfully. Just as any veg tan leather will, the natural colors darken and show their wear over time. It absorbs oils, scratches, and has a slight stretching. As with any leather it can and should be regularly waxed, buffed, and polished to maintain a premium look.
Or if you prefer the aged look, then let it go without maintenance and it will do just fine!
The brighter colours will resist stains enough to keep their original colour, but will instead get a deeper and more intense look.
In short, Buttero is one of the best leathers going around. From its variety of colors to the excellent finishes that can be achieved, there isn’t much quite like it.

Buttero leather Origin
The Tannery: Walpier Conceria, Tuscany, Italy
Buttero leather is a premium leather of the Conceria Walpier tannery, 100% vegetable tannery, tanning of cowhide leathers. It was born in 1974 in Ponte a Egola, one of those towns in Tuscany that are part of the only Italian district where there are high quality vegetable tanneries. Vegetable tanning is a very ancient process that uses exclusively tannin of vegetable origin and which requires time and craftsmanship to transform the raw materials into a completely natural leather that adapts to any type of product.
The history of the WALPIER tannery originates over 40 years ago, from a long family experience started by Ciampalini Gino, father of one of the current owners.
Today the tradition of a predominantly family-run company continues as the management is followed by the founderâs son and grandson with an eye to tradition and environmental protection.
